For many people, metaphor is a device of poetic imagination and rhetorical flourish - a matter of special language rather than ordinary language. Moreover, metaphor is often regarded as a quality inherent in the language of movement or choreography itself.
Metaphor permeates everyday life, not only in language, but also in the way we think and move our bodies. Our ordinary conceptual system, through which we think and act, is fundamentally metaphorical. The sharing session “The Metaphors We Live By” explores other dimensions of metaphor through a dialogue between the stylized choreographic conventions of Tuồng and the movement language of Western contemporary dance.

The stature and position of the Vietnam Tuồng Theatre today have been shaped by the immense contributions of generations of artists. Among them are figures whose names and talents have left a lasting influence on future generations in the fields of creation, performance, and training. Their artistry and character have earned the genuine respect of colleagues, students, and audiences alike. This sharing session is an expression of gratitude from today’s generation of artists to those who came before, offering younger generations a deeper understanding of the journey of preservation and creation undertaken by their predecessors.

CHOREOGRAPHER TÚ HOÀNG
Tú Hoàng was born and raised in Hanoi and is currently an independent artist. He is an emerging choreographer on the international dance scene, with works presented in countries including Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Taiwan, Malaysia, South Korea, Spain, and Denmark.
With years of experience and a deep understanding of different dance and “movement” forms - including ballet, hip hop, neoclassical dance, Vietnamese folk dance, as well as martial practices such as Tai Chi and Qigong - choreographer Tú Hoàng has combined these materials to develop a distinctive personal style of contemporary movement. Alongside his international activities, Tú Hoàng is also one of the pioneers of the contemporary dance movement in Vietnam.
Over the past decade, choreographer Tú Hoàng has worked with various dance companies as a choreographer and professional dancer, including Conny Janssen Danst - one of the top five most renowned dance companies in the Netherlands - the Vietnam National Opera and Ballet, Cinevox Junior Company, Regensburg Ballett, Ballet Pforzheim, and others.
MUSICIAN NGUYỄN QUỐC HOÀNG ANH
Hoàng Anh is an interdisciplinary artist and artistic director whose work spans multiple fields, including contemporary art and communications. His artistic practice reflects his interest in interpreting stories through a wide range of artistic media, including sound art, theatre, video, installation, and conceptual art.
His works contain multiple layers of meaning through experiments with materials, space, and social interaction, exploring historical and ecological issues in Vietnam. This forms part of his personal effort to interpret the social phenomena that appear to him through their own internal demands.
Alongside his individual artistic practice, Hoàng Anh is actively involved in building and expanding local arts and cultural communities. He believes that community is one of the core elements of his creative practice. He founded and has directed Lên Ngàn since 2019 — a multilingual arts and culture platform: an interdisciplinary collective that develops artistic projects with the aim of benefiting local communities.
Hoàng Anh is also the Project Director of Đom Đóm Center for Experimental Music and Art, the first and only organization in Vietnam dedicated to experimental music and new sound. In 2021, Hoàng Anh was a guest curator at Borderline Festival 11 in Athens, Greece, organized by Onassis Stegi; a speaker in the programme Arts and Culture for Sustainable Development in Southeast Asia, organized by the Royal University of Fine Arts in Cambodia and the Asian Art Foundation; and a judge for Marketing Peak Point 2022, organized by RMIT University Vietnam.
STAGE DIRECTOR HÀ NGUYÊN LONG
Hà Nguyên Long is an artist, founder, and creative director of XPLUSX STUDIO in Paris, France. He graduated from the Vietnam University of Fine Arts, Department of Painting, and from ESAT Paris, where he studied spatial design.
He has designed sets for numerous theatre productions in France, including at Théâtre de la Bastille, Scène Nationale de St-Nazaire, and the National Dramatic Center Montreuil. He also designed the set for Emile Azzi’s La Basilique Effacée at Festival d’Avignon 2018 and Hostage at Cuirieu Theatre Festival 2019.
He is currently a guest artist at TRC Théâtre de la Reine Clotilde in Paris as part of the programme “First National Tribute: Vietnam 2020.”

FORMER DIRECTOR OF THE VIETNAM TUỒNG THEATRE — PEOPLE’S ARTIST PHẠM NGỌC TUẤN
“Facing Infinity” is a collaborative project between Lên Ngàn, the Vietnam Tuồng Theatre, and choreographer Tú Hoàng. The project’s activities are supported and accompanied by the Hanoi Department of Culture, the Hoàn Kiếm Lake and Hanoi Old Quarter Management Board, the Dance Department of the Military University of Culture and Arts, and FOD Collective Studio.
The project is part of the Vietnam Tuồng Theatre’s young audience development programme, with a series of events that invite the public to move beyond familiar artistic boundaries and approach the heritage of traditional theatre through more creative forms.
